BACK
DOU Yi Jen, born in Miaoli in 1993, is a Saisiyat aboriginal in Nauzhuang Township. Studying currently in the Graduate Institute of Trans-disciplinary Arts of Taipei National University of Arts, she had developed art projects in Shaoxing community, Taipei and in Matsu Village, Taoyuan. Through historical researches and field studies, DOU traces her identification and the roots of her tribe’s culture. By recording the Saisiyat’s festival with the conversion of negative films, the artwork “Taai” attempts to display the invisible and sacred god in the Pas-ta'ai ritual. And through digital photography, the artwork “The Committee of Riverside” records the pre-event meeting of the Pas-ta'ai.

Due to weak self-identity and ignorance of culture in the past, I sought my cultural roots. On the root-seeking path, as the key point to establishing the relationship between the spirits, the potential influence of the aboriginals’ world outlook on contemporary life is an important start for learning recognition. Through conversions of negative films, the black parts of the festival’s photos are turned into white, displaying the invisible ghost - the awe-inspiring spirits for the Saisiyat (the Short People). The murky effect on the ancient ritual caused by the weather is seen as the sacred spirits’ conjuring, accompanied by discussions and speculations.

“We must be better this time,” yelled the elders in the tribe, “don’t make the same mistakes!” They gather the clansmen to prepare for the biennial sacred festival – Pas-ta'ai. The committee of riverside is a pre-event meeting of Pas-ta'ai. The elders would discuss in a circle at the riverside, while the other clansmen listen attentively.
